Definition of pen sets

I am working in AC11 on a file that was orginally started in AC6.5. After bringing it into AC11, there was only one pen set available (the one I had used in AC6.5 in 1999).

I tried to use attribute manager to bring in new pen sets from a template file, but all it allows me to do is to overwrite the one pen set that I have. It won't allow me to create a new set.

The only workaround I have found to create a new set is to change any pen definition in the pens and colors dialog box. After changing something, I am allowed to save a new set with a new name. After I do this, then I can go to attribute manager and overwrite the temporary set I just created with the standard set I want to use.

This seems like a very clunky way to do things. Is there a better way to append a new pen set to an existing file, without removing the pen sets that are already there?

IS there a reason you can't use Append instead of Overwrite in the Attribute Manager?

You can:

1. Import pen sets from other AC11 (& 10) files in Attribute Manager. Make sure you have selected the pen sets tab (not the pens tab) and use "Append" instead of "Overwrite".

2. Open pen settings, change pens and "Store as..."

3. Import layouts. (This will often bring in more pen sets than you want.)

Note that layouts created prior to PM 9 need to be imported to a layout book in PM 9 before they can be read into AC10 or AC11.

Wow, Matthew, you got it. I had the pens tab. I didn't even realize there was a different pen sets tab!!

Next question: is there a way to print out the pen table in color w/ line weights to document what is in it?

There's an object in the Objects depository that is supposed to output the pen set to a table, but when each square (representing a pen) was black.

Maybe it works with v. 10?

Another (more obscure) way to copy pensets is to copy drawings from one file to another. The penset assigned to the drawing will be appended to the pen set list.

You can print out the content of a pen set under the Pens & Colors tab of the Attribute Manager.
