How to Do a Statue

Anonymous
Not applicable
I need to put some statues of things like Buddhas and other Buddhist personnages into my model, and most definitely do not want to try to model them.

I tried creating a cylinder of about the right dimensions using the column tool and applying an image of the statue I want as a texture, but it ends up looking exactly like what it is, and multiplies the image around the cylinder, despite having marked it to only use one.

Any suggestions?

There is a free one at The 3D Studio

This one looks south asian, perhaps Thai? It is in 3DS format so you will need to convert it. I believe there is an add-on for this, but I don't remember its status (availability, AC9 compatibility).

I see you're still on 8.1.3. Maybe it's time to upgrade

Any way in the Goodies folder of ArchiCAD 9.0 is a folder named 3DStudio in. There is an html file with clear instructions on importing 3D Studio files.

In the case of the file referenced by Matthew, note that the site offers 2 download choices; one is a .3ds file and the other, .max. Take the .3ds file.

By the way, it's a big file. The model wants to come in as a model 1400+ feet high. I changed it to 4' and it came in fine... just took a while. I did a Google search for 3D Studio statues and download 3D studio statues and got quite a few results.

Depending on what you're planning to 'do' with the statue, wouldn't billboarding it (like with alpha-trees) be maybe the simplest solution?

Assuming you can find a good 'side-shot' of a statue on the net ... failing that you could go down to the Met with a camera?!

Thanks, Matthew, but it's a Chinese Zen temple, and the look is just too different to work. I hadn't thought to search for an existing one, though, so I'm now poking around for others.

Is there a way to convert 3DS models in AC 8.1?

Is there any way to use a .max image? I found the perfect model on 3D Modelworks, but that's the only format offered.

Unfortunately, forking out $500 to upgrade a product I'm using once or twice a year at this point just to bring in a single image just ain't in the cards without being able to bill someone for it. I've already had more versions of AC than I've done projects in it <sigh>.

Stuart, what do you mean by "billboarding it"? It's going to be the spotlit centerpiece on the altar of the temple's meditation hall - pretty much the main event in the space.

P.S. Actually, upon downloading the 3D Studio image and taking a look at it in formZ, if I can find a way to lop off the pointy thing on the top, it will do for this project as long as I don't get too close in. The poor guy has no feet!

Hi Wendy,

I'm really curious and interested on this Buddha statue you are talking about... could post here an image about it?

This is what the one from 3D studio looks like.
Thanks Matthew for that tip about using the 3DS converter add-on.
I didn't know it was there. It works great!

Here's the one from 3D Modelworks. I've sent an email to the modeler to see if he can convert it to a useable format.

And I just made a liar out of myself this morning - I ended up calling my reseller and ordering the upgrade to AC9 after all.
