Also, in AC-19 how do I select things by dragging cursor to include what's inside box not just crossing it? This was much easier in AC-18. Selecting things in general in AC is very difficult, trying to find tiny little spots, is there not a better way to select things (windows, columns, doors, walls, etc.)?
Thanks!

Not sure about your first problem. Sounds tricky.
As for selection, you have 3 selection methods available. Partial Elements, Entire Elements, Direction Dependent (left to right, image below). If you have Direction Dependent set, when you drag your window from left to right things must be entirely within the selection window to be selected. If you drag from right to left elements need only cross the selection window to be selected.
Another selection method which is quite handy is to combine a Marquee with a specific element. So draw your marquee, change to the tool of the element you wish to select, and CMD-A (or CTRL-A for win) to select all of those elements within the marquee.
Note also that if you are trying to select a particular element, make that element's tool active first, then selection will default to it. For example, if you're trying to select a slab which has an edge common with a wall, select the Slab tool first and the wall will be ignored, the slab will have priority.

Thanks Stuart,
Good tip on using the marquee and tool combination!
As, for the left to right vs. right to left - that is how I remembered it in AC-18. Now, AC-19 has a totally different process - when I press shift and click with mouse it wants me to draw a reference line to start a grayed selection area. It does not seem to matter whether I go left to right or right to left, it gets everything it crosses. Is there a way to get the old selection box back?

Are you sure you don't have 'grid snap' turned on? This can make selecting things behave weirdly.

I checked - 'grid snap' was off. Turned it on, no difference. Back off, no difference. I sent to tech. support, will see what they say...

Sounds like it could potentially have something to do with your floor plan cut plane. Have you adjusted that and/or the relevant settings of your objects?
Cheers,

Checked that w/ tech support, floor plan cut plane set to the default - 4' nothing off there...
I have had issues with columns showing on wrong floors on every project... frustrating. Nothing complicated about them either, just a square column 8"x8" or 1.5"x1.5" in this case.
