Suggestions to model beaux arts facade

David Bearss

I am not trying to replicate every profile of the facade. I am looking for advice on how to build up the piers and base. I have started with the basic mass of the building which is a 16" masonry wall at the plane of the windows. The columns, piers, base, cornice, and trim are built out from that building face. To model I am thinking to simply add more layers of walls. Then merge walls??

Suggestions? Thanks.

Here is some unsolicited and unwanted advise. Model every part of that builing. Including the mortar, and the carved work.
It is not has hard as you might think.

That stuff looks marvellous!
I have had success with this using DXF imported through illustrator tracing of images. What method do you use?

its a secret.

Sorry about the absence folks as I have been away. Had some pressing windsurfing to do in The Gorge. Also for some reason my notices are not making it through to my e-mail. Have to check my settings.
Looks like some lively discussion. Dwight's suggestion incorporating complex profile makes the most sense for this project as truly accurate mortar joints are not essential for this project. Intricate work at capitals and spandrel panels are unimportant also. Thanks to Mr. Jepson I now know that it is possible however. Might be a good wintertime brain tease to figure that method out. Have to admit I dont use this tool enough.
Thanks all!

I was passing through The Dalles on Friday afternoon.
There are a lot of great buildings there. I have alwasys wanted to model St. Peters Catholic Church or the Wasoc County Courthouse.

Steve,
There is some great history in The Dalles and some barely surviving historic buildings. You might also be interested in the old Elks Club. Actually listed for sale right now. Needs some loving. Floating dance floor on the third level.
BTW my humble office is directly across the street form the county courthouse in a hundred year old boarding house that dates back to the steam engine railroad days. Next time you are comng through give a shout.

David,
What is it they have put on some of these buildings to make the stone look like marble or at least some better quality or kind of stone? It looks to thick for paint and it seems to have little blue speckels. It's on the Grayer Building.
