Template

We have two main Archicad files(templates) which we use.

One we use for all our designing of the houses and one for all our details, cladding, foundation details etc

We would copy and paste the selected details from the details template over to our main template when we need to but we do this for every job

I was wondering if there was a better way of doing this?

Operating system used: Windows

are you on bimcloud? you can place views from file A onto layouts of file B using the organizer...
this method does come with a caveat... updating them has been a PITA in the past.
...
other options I have tried in the past: put all like details onto separate stories, rather than detail or worksheet views. So in the detail file, you may have:

-story 1: roof details
-story 2: foundation details
-story 3: interior trim details
-etc.
then, in your project files, you can place the detail file (either pln OR teamwork file) as a hotlink moduel - file > external content > place hotlink.
you can be selective on which stories you place to the project files detail views to only bring in the details/type of details you need
...
you can also save out certain views as either .mod file. If you export the .mod, select the detail(s) you need from your det file, go to file > external content > save selection as module. this has an slight disadvantage from the previous workflow, that when you update a detail, you need to save over the original .mod then update it in the hotlink manager of the project file. But it does let you select only the details you need.
...

there used to be a way to save as a .pmk... this goes back to pre-ac 10 era archicad, but up until recently, I know some people were still using this workflow to draw details in a separate file from the working model file... I haven't used that workflow since... maybe 2005 or 2006; so I couldn't even tell you if it's even an option any more
