From the 3D window, save as 3DS.
And what settings to adjust when importing the file in 3dMax?

Element tips - Materials
Units that is not to be easy you need to work intro 3D MAX wit Generic units
is easy way in max if you tracing shadows and GI or Photons that is necessary
i am in generic units in max who is for me = 1meter for that i set the option Set Drawing units to 1000.mm if you work in meters in AC if you work in centimeter make 100.mm if you work in millimeters 1mm
after that you open 3DS MAX an make import command choose the file who you export from AC and thats all for a materials all Library parts you need to pick him materials they type is Multi sub Object material in MAX Material editor you can change all of them

I am still unable to import the file corectly... no improvement after doing exactly what you said...
All that 3dstudio max imports is three axis and one arrow which i suspect is the light direction...
