You can use PC nvidia cards keep existing ATI card for driving the display and use nvidia card purely for rendering / calculation.
This is very important. Thanks for pointing this out. Anyone considering using Octane Render for production, should definitely use it with a system that uses 2 video cards (one for display - the other for rendering). When I tried out the demo version, it does lock up other applications significantly while rendering.

Looks like it won't work on any iMacs as it requires Nvidia
graphic cards. Too bad.
You can run OctaneStandalone on NVidia card equiped Macs (the bigger Macbook Pro's, etc). The OctaneRender for ArchiCAD plugin however has not yet been compiled under OSX. I think there will probably be Mac versions of some the plugins the next 3-6 months.

You don't need a Quadro card. In fact octane renders best on a gamercard.

Otoy itself advices either the GTX570 (PassMark - G3D@4331 - $260) or GTX 580 (PassMark - G3D@4995 - $340)

Also good (and cheaper) options GTX660 Ti (PassMark - G3D@4642 - $280) or GTX660 (PassMark - G3D@4035 - $240)

Whilst Otoy recommend the 500 series cards, I think they are slightly better suited to the modelling app users of Octane (3ds max, C4D, etc). For the architecture plugins like ArchiCAD, I think the current 600 series (or Titan) cards are a little better, since they prove over double the texturemap capacity of the 500 series. The GTX 650 is the bottom end of the range (around $150) through to the GTX 690 and Titan ($1,000?).

Otoy announced today a cloud rendering solution for OctaneRender. The announcement is at render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=29544. The video link is particularly interesting - from 2hrs 36mins onwards - and shows the sort of thing which will be possible to do directly from the OctaneRender for ArchiCAD plugin.

Also, the next release of Octane is going to lift the recommendation of having a second graphics card for your Windows display adapter - which will be a welcome enhancement.

Not sure about the vid. It's not 2.36h long?

btw Do you have any idea if/when a demo will be available?

You can go to any point in the video after it starts.
You need to go to the 2 h 10 minute mark, that is where the Octane part starts.
Pretty impressive, by the way.

At a guess, I would say it's 2-3 weeks away. But things like the next release of Octane might get in the way.

Attached is a sample of the new volumetric fog effects you can get with the 1.11 build of the plugin.

ArchiCAD is incredibly well suited to cloud rendering solutions like this, because in general the scene geometry and texturemaps are considerably smaller than with other 3d modelling apps (so the bandwidth requirement is lower), and once the scene is in the cloud renderer, only the camera position or sun vector need to be changed to render fly-thru's and sun studies.
