Just found out that 3ds has a stupid limitation of 8 signs in filenames.

You obviously never worked in 3DS 3 in DOS ... 😉

EVERYTHING was 8.3 then ... talk about cryptic file names!

Today I wanted it back ... why do AutoCAD users have to write a short story in the filename?

The 3ds-file format is from the DOS Days. No direct solution, unless you use 8.3 texture names in the ArchiCAD model.

I never worry about filenames, but when I export a 3ds-model from ArchiCAD, the file format only has place reserved for 8.3 characters, so I can expect some manual material assignment.

I usually only keep the ArchiCAD geometry & the texture placement. Once I got it in 3ds max (or VIZ or Cinema4D) I can use the superior materials in those programs, but don't have to worry that it's not placed correct.

The 3ds-importer is a plugin (which is included in ArchiCAD 9.0, IIRC, in the goodies). The 3ds-exporter is also an ArchiCAD-plugin which is enabled by default.

The 3ds-importer for older versions of ArchiCAD was never included.
