but am coming unstuck at the open .dwg as an object stage.
i seem to distantly remember this as a way of importing autocad plans in previous versions (as a way of avoiding importing superflous layers...) however, when i try now, object dialog box tells me there are no elements in 3d window;
would appreciate any tips regarding steps i may be missing.
thanks in advance.

Maybe if you explained the steps that you are doing now, we could see what is missing?

ok, i just figured it out...
when saving plan to dwg, i had the translation setup set to paperspace instead of modelspace
changed it to modelspace, saved plan as dwg, then selected dwg file with the "open object" option.
dwg drawing appears as a library part visible in the 3d window.
