dwg translator visable layers only

Is there a way to set up your translator to export only the visible layers in archicad?
What i am getting when i use my translator is the layer combination from achicad is applied to the paper space in autocad... which is good... but in order to make working dwg's i also need that layer combo to show up in model space....
right now every layer that has anything on it in archicad is showing up turned on in autocad....
does any one know any tricks of the trade that i am missing
