I find the guides are almost useless for placing new elements and you can't adjust where the guides measure to.
But place the element and then drag it, and you can set the measurement point.

I guess you need to give DGs more practice to digest it well,
in my first case guides were measured from the reference line as attached below.
*In this case I could change the reference line location to the other face so i could measure easily from that edge, you don't have to change the element's position to change its reference line location, you can use (Modify wall reference line) via toolbar or the Edit menu, I hope that helps.
* The attached photo is taken from V27 as the tooltips function is not working well in V28 & I sent a ticket regarding this.

Instead of playing around with what side of the wall the reference line is on (this can have other implications in your model), or what part of the wall the distance guides measure to (edge or reference line), I find it just easier to place the window (or element anywhere).
Then select and drag and then it is easier to reset where the distance guides measure to.
That way you can measure exactly to the point you want.
Barry.

Of course, I can see how your solution is the best way to use DGs but I scare it can be the only way to use DGs.

Could you please share the ticket number, you have mentioned?

Hi @Illes Papp
Do you mean the ticket number regarding Tooltips disorder?
This is the one I've mentioned.

Here it's the ticket number link,

BTW I had a reply from GS via @Gino Hansen.

This is the method I use without guides as well. So in this case you just don't win anything with the guides, because you place your object anywhere and then drag it in relative distance from any object you want. if you use the new guides the same way then you didn't save any clicks.
Of course I understand how hard it is to create a tool that can read minds... 🙂

Have disabled them again.
They keep showing up always in the wrong place for me to select an object and never work ok as a reference.

I find the distance guides really interesting, and quite helpful with orthogonal, straight walls. Yet, in our design as my colleagues used to say "There is nothing straight". Hopefully, in a future release of Archicad, they will work in skewed, curved environments as well. If it is not there yet, my wish is: please put it on the Wishlist. 😃
Thanks.
