3ds Import tool - Large GDL files size

I have a 3ds model of an Eames Lounge from the Herman Miller website and would like to use it in a project, however the size of the file is quiet large for a GDL object (1.4mb) is there an easy way of reducing the file size when using the 3ds import add on tool???

I have the same problem...some chairs from the firms I need, are too heavy and I can't manage the file neuther in archicad (slow file) nor above all in artlantis (very but very slow!).. Are there some settings to reduce geometry complexity before importing these objects (3ds format)? Or after importing them, in the 3ds import settings dialogue? Thanks to everyone!
Try reducing mesh - either with standalone tools or if You can use a modeler software - try using built in mesh reducing tools,
1.4 MB GSM file created from 3ds is quite small BTW. - the 3ds meshes are imported using the very low level GDL commands so at least 7 lines of code is used to define a triangle.

Thanx a lot Priotr, I imagine your solution is the best, but unfortunately I haven't 3dmax in my new office...
I'd wish there were some tricks in the 3DS importing dialogue box or something different using archicad..
But I think it is only a problem of mine, cause everyone has a modeler, hasn.t he?!

I know this used to work but now on my setup it doesn't.
Can anyone load this file? Then tell me how you made it as I have been trying for hours.

The attachment is zero bytes.
Maybe it was too large so the forum software didn't allow.
Maybe you should share in a folder like Dropbox and give us the public link.

Try the link above please. There are 2 files, one with textures the other without. I get Errors in the script on loading the file into archicad.

This is the error I get

Can you put the GDL file in Dropbox?
I cannot open the 3DS file, there is something wrong with it.

I could but it will not work. The errors are at lines where metal maps are applied. Have given up with Archicad, its MUCH easier to do the whole job in 3dsmaxdesign. Have also tried opening the 3ds in other programs, they all work flawlessly. Therefore its the Graphisoft 3ds routine that needs updating.
These days I get more and more work where I must integrate engineering models into my projects. 3dsmax does it all in the one program and its easy to use. Thanks very much for the time taken.
