The first place to start, though, is the more concise book "Introduction to Object Making" by David Nicholson-Cole. This book / PDF used to be included in the ArchiCAD package and for reasons unknown is included no longer (although much of the content has been merged into the Help files).
Download the book here while this link is still active:
There is also a free training guide that covers non-scripted and introductory scripted object-making:
Good luck,
Karl

I'm training myself GDL too, my suggestion is you should start with "GDL interactive training packages" from Graphisoft (Karl's 3rd link) until you think you "need to take a break"

After that, you should read "Object Making" by David Nicholson-Cole (Karl's 2nd link). I found it accidentally but it "made me feel stronger in GDL forest". Actually, it's easier to read than GDL Handbook (what we need to buy)
The last thing is GDL Cookbook by David Nicholson-Cole (Karl's 1st link) where you can find everything else in GDL. (my next step as well)

david wrote:Thanks for posting and uploading those, David! And, for calling attention to issuu.com which I had not heard of before. What a great site!!
The book Object making with ArchiCAD was first written in 2001, and greatly re-written in 2004 for version 9.0. Almost everything in it is still relevant. Although ArchiCAD and GDL have moved on an acquired new features, the 'OMWAC" of 2004 is still perfect as a beginner's introduction. I hope it is still available from GS website.
I have uploaded it to ISSUU.COM so it is available on:
