is there a way to design a spiral stair with solid side wall based on an oval shape?

That's what I thought, but how can you get the side wall to follow the tread of the stair (like a spiral?)

you draw a curved wall and smack the treads on.

You can model such a wall with a curved wall, as Dwight says, and then trim the top and bottom of it by using the curved ramp object in the library.

Or, you can purchase the Objective add-on which makes sloped extruded curved objects pretty straightforward:

but, the result is an object and not a wall, in case that matters, so no section skins, core-only, etc. See also this thread:

But isn't the curved ramp based on a circle? My stair is oval...
