trying to better understand how to show column outline in wall.

Set the column’s material to be different from wall’s material then bring columns to front.

both are "wood structural". do i need to then create another "wood structural" in building materials?

Columns and wall can be in different layers with different intersection groups, so they don´t interact with each other:
