Landscape drawing

Does anyone have a technique they would like to share for doing a landscape plan in AC10?

My goal is to use library plants that in 2d can have custom text. For my colored landscape plan I want to just view the 3d model from the top and get a nice color plan with shadows.

Currently I was trying to use the "Tree 3d 01" with the object ID being the custom text the corresponds with the plant legend. I then auto Label the tree.

Any other ideas? objects?

Maybe I should post this in another catgory? Now I'm curious how others do their landscape plans.

Crossposting is never a good idea.

My site plans in Archicad are usually black and white and any color ones are Photoshopped.

In general, you don't have a way to get shadows projected in plan in Archicad, so you would probably have to do this as a rendering in the 3D window.... except then you cannot place any text on it. Unfortunately there is no way to place labels in a rendering.

My recommendation would be to save the 3D rendering as a bitmap then place the text in with Photoshop or some other graphics software.

I used to use an 3D Text object so to add texts to my renderings. It worked ok. I am not sure I can remember in which version's library this object can be found.

You can place 3D text in a couple ways, but not labels (tied to the object or ID in some way)

thanks for the pointers.

Ok, so I will not be able to use the ID label but I will just be copying the trees around grouped with a 3d text object.

Anyone want to post their colored landscape plans as examples?

Looks like you've found the best solution already.

Set your 3D window to Internal Engine with Vectorical Sun Shadows set to Contours On and your Parallel Projection to Top with the camera azimuth at 270 degrees.

Then in the 3D Window use the Marquee tool with the Geometry method set to flat, and copy the entire plan as a scaled drawing. Then paste that back into your floor plan. Use the undo/redo trick to select the pasted elements, group and move them onto a dedicated layer.

This gives a one time snapshot of shadows and colored plans, that it is very quick and easy, so while it isn't live, it is simple to update.

Then you can auto-label away. There's really not much more to it AFAIR.

thanks for the technique.

I guess I'll be an "unlinker" just this one time

Juuuuust this once!

I have used this technique to map the image back onto a mesh too. Just make a material out of image and apply it to the mesh.

Probably a little off topic, but maybe worth a mention.

Cheers,
Link.

Absolutely! Amazing, Link! My I humbly request a link to a description of your technique?
