My magnet stopped working

Anonymous

I love my magnet but the space bar no longer turns it off & on.
I restart day after day & still it won't work. Does anyone know why this would happen?

Also, I tried the Default Work Environment from ArchiCAD 17, no effect. Still doesn't turn on or off magnet & magic wand. Upgrading operating system is not an option. I am using the same set up as/ of 6 months ago. It worked then & it doesn't work now. Thanks for trying to solve this. Looking forward to any other options you might have.

Have the same problem, spacebar not working. No magic wand, no magnet override. I checked the built in archicad shortcuts already, still listed there. I checked the MacOS keyboard shortcuts, no space bar there. I even have Spotlight turned off so as not to confuse it. Nothing else is running. A restart will usually fix it but that's a PITA.

This is even worse than my Info Box disappearing but that's another complaint.

Can you guys activate and deactivate the "Magnet" with the Quick Selection button of the Arrow Tool in the Info Box? Just to try to narrow it down.
(Maybe a stupid question but could Grid Snap be turned ON?)

Another thing I was thinking of is the graphics card driver? If a driver update makes any difference?

Yes you can still select them (both the magnet and the magic wand) in their respective toolbars/boxes, its just the spacebar shortcut functionality has stopped.

Grid snap definitely off.

Hi Guys,

I have started a case on this situation. I looked, but I found no reports of contact to the North American support office. If you ever find something like this that seems buggy please contact your regional support office. Although we do our best to support from all angles there is no guarantee GRAPHISOFT will spot all issues in this forum. It is a place for users to discuss with other users.

So far it seems that the 2 of you (jcrarch and kevin b) are the only ones we know of with this issue. So for now I only have some broad suggestions:

• Just a hunch based on a previous bug in AC18 that is now fixed: Try clicking the Pick Up Parameters button (Eyedropper) once or more in the Standard Toolbar and then try to use the space bar for Quick Selection (Magnet) or Magic Wand. Let me know if that has an effect.

• Try creating a new user account on your Mac and login with it. See if the problem remains when you open a file in ArchiCAD. While this does not narrow things down by much, it at least lets you know if there is something on the System level that is wrong or if it is something in the User account that is amiss.

• If the above does nothing for the situation, next are the basic troubleshooting steps when something really odd is happening:
1. Store and Export your Work Environment for safekeeping.
2. Send in all changes on Teamwork projects; jot down your BIM Server address, username and password to re-enter later; and do a Preferences Cleaning.
STOP and test to see if the problem is gone.
3. Repair permissions on the OS Drive (typically "Macintosh HD") with Disk Utility
- Then go to Applications and click once on the Graphisoft folder to highlight it and right-click > Get Info ( CMD + I ).
- Set all listed names to Read & Write privilege.
- Also, click the padlock to make elevated changes and then click the settings button and choose "Apply to enclosed items" so as to make sure all files inside the Graphisoft folder have "Read & Write" permissions for all users.
STOP and test to see if the problem is gone.
4. Uninstall ArchiCAD or just move the ArchiCAD 18 folder to the trash.
5. Re-install ArchiCAD and the latest available update.
STOP and test to see if the problem is gone.

• Whenever I see a rare case on a Mac my eye first goes to the menu bar at the top of the screen to spot any icons of services that are not common. We have had cases where a French Dictionary app caused ArchiCAD to malfunction. Also, Colorful SideBar and the SIMBL environment have caused problems with AC. So look for any little widgets, add-ons, plug-ins to the OS X environment that might be out of the norm and disable them or remove them as a test. This excludes widely-used apps like Evernote, Dropbox, etc. I am referring to those little apps that provide tweaks to the OS.

I hope this helps somewhat in the meantime while I put my head together with my colleagues in Budapest.

Let me ask you something which might be a stupid question.
What do you think pressing the SPACE bar does?
From what I read in the above quote I kind of get the idea that you may think a press on the SPACE bar should turn the magnet ON or OFF permanently. Or it should turn the Magic Wand ON or OFF permanently.
However, the way it works is it changes the state of the "Magnet" (Quick Selection) or enables the Magic Wand only as long as it is held down. So it is not that you press the SPACE bar and Quick Selection is turned ON. Press the SPACE bar again and Quick Selection is turned OFF. It changes to the other state only as long as the SPACE bar is held down.

As I said, I might misunderstand it...

I am having a similar problem. Months ago I realized space bar would not activate the magic wand. I don't know if its related but, around the same time when I enter explore mode in 3D I could no longer move around (it locks the keyboard out completely. I can look around with the mouse but nothing will work on the keyboard, not even escape.)
I was using archicad 18 and did all the upgrades up to 5100 with no change. I recently installed archicad 19 and its still not fixed! and its not just my workstation, all the others in the office are having the same problem (about four).
Getting very frustrated.
Any suggestions welcome.

If using Mac OS try creating a new regular user and launch AC there, hopefully this NEW user might not load the stuff that might be conflicting with AC.
