Square footage

I have a Client that wants every space in the project named. Then he wants to have a square footage calc. of each space, no matter what it is or what it is used for.

What would be the easiest way to accomplish this? Zone on the drawing, then generate a schedule from the zone?

Yes it is. Or if you wanted to be quick'n'dirty you could use fills and text.

Cheers,

Do fills have the s.f. listed when you select them?

you can specify the area to show, and in the calcs, selected fills will add to get the gross.

each fill can be named as its ID so it will also list the space names in the calc.

this works pretty good for copied storeys.....

don't forget, the text of the fill or zone can be dragged off separately to any location. I like using the zones because they update when you make changes. I used to use a title block that had several categories like total building footprint, heated areas, garage, decks, etc... update the zones and it will update the info on the title block.

Call me a luddite:

Even though area/text/fills seem cheap and nasty compared to the sophistication and ease of use presented to us by the usual calculation menu options, you can see what you are doing and nothng is cryptic. It is hard to get into trouble with fills for floor area stuff.

Steve has a good idea there, but with fills you don't have to update them manually.

That's the key for me, but I am semi-obsessed with automation. Job hazard!

Back in the old days, before zones, I once did a four storey apartment building using individual fills to define floor areas for our obtuse FSR calculations, showing exactly where I thought the demarkation was. Each fill had a name: the apartment number. this was the fastest way I knew to keep track of the number of units and the ancillary space for the all-important net/gross calculations. That was what the client was most concerned with in the layout stage. It would be even easier with selection sets to instantly select the fills and do a basic calculation list....

OK I can see using the fills. But how do I get the s.f. information to a list like a schedule without doing it by hand( typing in by hand the s.f. onto a schedule sheet)

Will the schedule maker pull information from fills? I need the room name, room number, and the gross square foot inside the walls. Is that what you meant by the calculation list?

I'm not at my computer, can't try the different options you have discussed. I'm trying to plan ahead for this week.

Thanks

You can do this using the Interactive Schedule.

If you want this information in a list it would be much more easily accomplished using the Zone tool and the Interactive schedule.
