Turning the Sound Off

Anonymous
Not applicable
Is there any way of turning off the “ping” that occurs after a 3-D window has been generated, other than simply muting the sound on the computer.

A user in our office who is currently doing some VR models and listening to iTunes at the same time is doing a lot of complaining!

On Windows thee is a folder called "Sounds".
Try temporarily removing the files inside ...

Or, better, use the "Sounds" element, in the Windows Control Panel, browsing until the ArchiCAD section.

I think these only works for Windows. On older Mac versions you had to use ResEdit, do not know now, with OS-X

Options --> Preferences --> Image & Calculation --> 3D Progress Sounds (uncheck)

On the same note, does anyone now how to disable the other sounds, e.g. eyedropper 'donk'

Check out the 7 sounds in the SOUNDS folder (on my box they are under C:\Program Files\Graphisoft\ArchiCAD 9\Sounds).

If you want to annoy fellow workers you can always substitute wav files from http://www.fartfarm.com/ or http://frogstar.com/wav/effects.asp

If you want to keep things quiet then download the attachment (a 'null' wav file) and copy/rename for each of the sounds that you want to 'switch off'.

Does anybody know how to do this for OS X. Since my G5 Arrived and I have speakers connected to it I can't listen to either radio or iTunes because the eyedropper (parameter transfer) sound blast at twice the volume over whatever I am listening to.

ejrolon,
Here is your solution.

There is a way you can turn off the "inherit properties" sound in MAC too. It is a little bit complicated but I still tell you:

1. Go to the following homepage:
http://www.resexcellence.com/support_files/resedit.shtml
2. Download ResEdit 2.1.3.
3. Run the downloaded application
4. This will make a folder Resedit where the downloaded application was placed. This action will make MAC OS classic start.
-----------------------------------------------
5. Go to the ` ArchiCAD 9 folder/ArchiCADResourcesLIB ` file. Save a duplicate of this file to a safe place, or rename this duplicate to ArchiCADResourceLIBOriginal.

------------------------------------------------
6. Go to the newly created ResEdit 2.1.3 folder and run ResEdit (MAC OS classic will come up again).
7. Open ArchiCADResourcesLIB with ResEdit.
8. Select the sound section of the resources (marked by a speaker)
9. Go to the Edit menu end use the Clear tool.
10. Save the resource.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
11. Go to the Preferences of the OSX.
12. Open the sound preferences.
13. Under the Sound-Effects tab set the alert volume to a preferred loudness.
14. Start ArchiCAD and use the `inherit properties` tool.
15. Set the alert volume as you prefer.

ResEdit 2.1.3 ... This action will make MAC OS classic start.
So much for "Completely rewritten for OSX" 😉

But, seriously, why has Graphisoft maintained something everybody knows isn't true? Not that it matters much, when the program has gotten so much better, but it affects their credibility.

Let's hope the next version gets rid of the Classic remnants.
Parameters like these should be stored in easily accessed config (text) files, or in OSX's case, .plist files.

Now to the more problematic aspects of Ben's recommendations:

- RedEdit is a very old resource editor from Apple, not intended for OSX at all. Not all features work, and some may cause problems. Use with utmost care!

- Apple will likely not release a new resource editor for OSX, since this is not the recommended way to handle these things in OSX.

- There is a shareware OSX Resource editor that will let you do the same thing without opening Classic:
ResFool http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22145
But this is a third-party application that doesn't handle all aspects of resource files. It will, however, let you erase the sound resource from this file.

However, fooling around with the resource files is potentially dangerous. ALWAYS BACKUP the file you work on before doing this. If not, one mistake will probably force you to re-install Archicad from scratch.
And you must be aware that this recommendation will likely erase the built-in Archicad sounds completely- AC will use the system alert sound you've chosen instead.

So keep the backed-up resource file safe until you're satisfied with the results of this operation!
