they just installed AC17 and AC18 on my MAC.
I'm now getting "re" used to the MAC.....again...so for some reason...the "zoom selection" is now 'greyed out'?
Any advice?

Do you have anything selected?

Did you select something? It looks like you are only highlighting a couple of walls.

no....I don't want to "select" anything....I want to "zoom" to a windowed area? do I need to select something...then use the zoom? I don't recall it working like that....but I'll try it.

The grayed one is the one that says "Zoom to selection" so you need to have something selected.
"Zoom Window" is the magnifying glass with the plus sign at the bottom of the window. Click it and draw the rectangle.

I never use them except for the 'Fit in Window' one.
I just use the scroll wheel on the mouse.

I too use the mouse scroll wheel...just that yesterday, i was planted on a new MAC and the dern crazy magic mouse sucked! big time.....so I was lost as to where my icons were that zoomed, panned, scroll-wheeled in and out..etc.

You know drill....once an old dawg like me hones in on a way of doing something...procedurally.....there's no breakin' that habit. So I was a bit freaked, it was new job and I forgot my meds that morning.....so the combo of all those things led me to loss my "zoom" icon....no biggy.
it's all fine now.

thanks.

Does double clicking your scroll wheel (center button?) accomplish the same (fit in window)?
