As mentioned, pressing 1 regardless of which tool is selected, will take you into the arrow tool.
I never knew that if you press 2 regardless of which tool is selected, you go to the marquee tool.

I'm with Ben. I barely ever use the Arrow Tool. I just use its Info Box to control how my selection windows and marquee work.

Once in a while I need some weird polygon selection box and I'll use it, but that's about it.
Strongly supported.

Arrow is for people who don't really know what they want, or did not take the time to LEARN the selection process. Nothing personal, Matthew!

After following this discussion, I've been trying to use the shift button to select something, instead of pressing 1, to see if it speeds my work up.

BUT, I have problems with trying to cycle through seletions.
For example, at the moment I have a wall sitting on a slab. I want to select the wall.

Using my normal method: Press 1, click on the shared edge, if the slab was selected, click a second time and the wall would be selected.

Using the shift method: Hold down shift, click on shared edge, slab is selected. This is where the problem occurs. I thought that to cycle through available selections you held down shift + ctrl, but it doesn't seem to make a difference, I can't select the wall unless the wall tool is selected in the toolbar...

That is the point. Shift click selects the element whose tool is active, regardless of the number of other overlapping elements. It is two clicks plus shift, instead of cycling.
