Each layer has an Intersection Priority Number.
If that number is the same then walls will trim each other even if one of the layers is turned off.
If the numbers are different then they will not trim each other.
If set as zero then even walls in the same layer will not trim.
You can save different IPNs in each layer combination, so wall can trim in one combination but not in another.
