grouping like components in sketchup?

Hi,

Is there an easy way to make a group of items that when updated will update all the items (similar to the components in sketchup)? I would like to do a series of columns, knowing the column details will change and would only like to change one column when the time comes.

Thanks!

There is the Selections Palette which can store any number of elements. If they are located on several stories, create the selection group in 3D.
You can bring it up with the Window\Palettes\Selections menu command.
Select all those Column and save them as a Selection with this Palette.

Then, when you need to change them, change one column and save its settings as a Favorite. Then go to the Story or 3D where you see all Column, double-click the saved selection to select all Columns and apply to saved Favorite to all of them.

Thanks laszlonagy,

Well it doesn't seem to be working for me. So, my 'columns' are a combination of things - a column, w/ trim that is done as a 'wall' top and bottom. The selections portion seems to work as you describe, but when I apply the favorites, it changes things all together - not as I had saved it. Originally I had capitals grouped, base grouped, and then the column as a whole grouped. I tried it leaving everything grouped and with nothing grouped - similar results each time - not what I had saved.

Also, there are icons under the selections palette - not sure what those do?

Thanks!

Dogwood what you are looking for are "Modules" the difference with sketch up is that they have to be edited as a separate file instead of within the project.

In SKetchUp they are called "Components" not groups.

-----
Basic Procedure is:

1. Select items in Floor Plan
2. File-> External Content-> Save Selection as Module
3. Uncheck "Replace Selection with Hotlinked Moduel"
4. Named it and save were AC can find it, it will behave like XRefs
5. Use File-> External Content->Place Hotlink Module to place the first copy
6. Copy as needed

To Edit

1. Edit the original items that were used to create the module
2. Resave using previous steps overwriting the Mod file
3. Use Hotlink Manager to update the other copies.

Thanks Eduardo,

That was what I was looking for - still not as easy as SU, but works.

Thank you!
