The way I get around it is to use the "orbit" tool by right clicking on the 3d window screen and then slightly move your view while on orbit. This will temporarily remove the 3D user-origin symbol along with 3D lines until you hit you esc key, and then it it will come back again.

 Not the exact answer I was looking for.  Seems I need to make this a wish along with a wish to add a button on a tool bar to turn shadows on and off without opening the 3D panel each time.
