Lighting Conundrum - Function Room

Anonymous
Not applicable
Hi All,

I'm currently working on a rendering of a hotel function room and not doing too well lighting the scene correctly. I'm trying to use the 'light cone down' method but I'm not happy about the results I'm generating. I'm also getting very dark ceiling/walls. I've also placed 3 general lights @ minus 1200mm below the scene (light blue in colour - intensity 100, fall off 2.5) but things are still murky. If anyone can share any tips/advice on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Stone Thrower

PS I'm also in search of a model of a nice looking function room chair (if there is any such thing)

Aside from doing this in Art•Lantis R, place a window light shining upwards at the floor. That will light up the walls and the ceiling. General lights are not good for the effect that you want.

BTW, do you have Dwight's book? If not, get one now.

Use the "Undersun" for this one.

In the book.

Order as below - includes update: LightWorks in ArchiCAD 10

In the real world, how would you NOT make this a murky space with all of that downlighting??

I have to agree with Dwight on this one. It is not so much the rendering method (though radiosity would improve it a bit) as it is the lighting design. Perhaps some cove lighting and wall sconces would warm the place up.

Yes but the fixtures cost a small fortune. Aren't they only available from Mount Olympus?

Yes, you get the supplement.

Bytheway, did you read the legal notice in the book, just for fun? Haha.

I am waiting for the completed application disk before writing the supplement - the changes were only applied at the last minute in the beta and I'm waiting to see what got fixed in the final release.

There are three fundamental changes to the shaders:

One that radically simplifies rendering,
one that makes a mess, and one that doesn't work [yet].

The Quick Start Guide will be re-written because the formerly Cheap and Nasty Rendering Method [As opposed to the Better and slower Method] is so much better in ArchiCAD 10 that the SunObject is obsolete except as an Undersun.

Certain other parts of the book are obsolete since fewer workarounds are needed.

Expect the new information in mid-June.

Here's the scoop on how to get the ArchiCAD 10 supplement:

When you buy the book, page 3 invites you to register your copy by answering certain skill-testing questions. I'll be sending a link to everybody who registered on how to download the supplement.

Every ArchiCAD user benfits by buying my book. It turns a difficult rendering engine into a reasonable and predictable one. Even more so in ArchiCAD 10.

Buy my book.
