Monte carlo methods (that is the general category of methods Maxwell is using) is based on creating a propability chain (markov chain) that converges to the correct result. It is also known that such algorithms are time consuming, so if someone expects the time to be cut in half, then he is just misled.

On the other hand, if you set an alternative renderer , and require it to render a since with radiocity ON, caustics ON and some compex geometry and lights then i ASSURE you maxwell is much faster AND you get an image even at 10 minutes (although noisy, but on other renderers you just get a balck screen).

Last, having played with MW for about 40 days, its is the EASIEST of programs to setup. You can produce almost real pictures, without beeing a pro.

There are many pictures from users in the maxwell forum (you have just to register to the forum because the area is not avaliable to guests).

Sounds too good to be true! If it is really that good i would just have one workstation rendering away all day....

it is better than you beleive... those that using maxwell know what I mean.

I have tested most of the well know render engines out there including the famous Vray...(which is amazing by the way)

... when I am saying tested I mean spent 2moths 10hrs per day learning them... Maxwell renderer is amazing... can not be compared with anything right now in terms of quality....

I have done projects with maxwell with less than 2hrs renderings...

Just try to render an interior with Maxwell... just enable the physical sky.... not even sun light... and then...🙂

...anyway I can continue for ever talking about the amazing Maxwell quality!

if you like have a look at some of my rendering with maxwell... all scenes were rendered using only 1 light !

Here is a generic 3ds to mxs translator. Should work with the 3ds files ArchiCAD exports

It is made for the SKETCHUP program, but isn't a 3ds the same from any program?

Get 3ds2mxs v1.2 program here.
Get 3ds2mxs v1.2 documentation here.

Maxwell Users please chime in on this question.
A 3ds file can only contain texture maps in 8.3 DOS naming (to which most ArchiCAD texture-maps don't correspond.

A 3ds file can only contain about 65000 points per object.

A 3ds file only contains polygon meshes (including texture mapping and smoothing). The textures are referenced elsewhere.

There is no material property for reflection, so to get any reflective surface, you need to edit the files.

This means, even if you generate a 3ds-file from an ArchiCAD model, you need to (manually?) edit the Maxwell file afterwards to get correct results.

So an ArchiCAD add-on would still be a better solution.
