3D AutoCAD Export Problem - ArchiCAD 11

Hi,

I have a problem exporting an ArchiCAD V 11 model into AutoCAD 3D. Attached is the image that I saved from ArchiCAD V 11.

I am working with ArchiCAD USA V 11 - Build 1033.

I am using the same DWG translator settings in both the versions, but still with no luck.

Thanks in advance.

AutoCAD's modelling capabilities were not great before 2007. It now retains the history of interactions between solids and voids, so if you don't like the results, you can always get the original solids back.

So does Archicad - Solid Element Operations has been with us for a while.
Of course, Revit had this for ages, but when one company buys another I guess you should expect the gearbox from company A to show up in the company B car!
I just wonder what gearboxes we'll get from C4D? Allplan? Vectorworks? IBD? massfix? On-site? Building Services? N-bau financials, iPunkt, rivera, Docuware? Allfa, CW-Haus, CASA, iX-HAUS, CREM?

But it was R12 + DOS. not R20? and XP.

Sorry to break the reverie but back to topic...

I have a complex multi-storey 3d model in AC11, with hundreds of views in trade specific Plan/Sec/Elev/View modes.
We are about to export the whole project to the Timber Frame Engineers and Panel Setters. They have AutoCAD 2008 (probably raw, unlikely to be the Architecture flavour)
Apparently, they plan to redraw the whole thing into 3D components then use those to generate, in another program, the NC Cutting List Instruction File.

Question: Is is possible to simply export the entire 3D pln or archive file as a single model, so they can just load it into A2008 in one hit, from which they can create their own custom views and/or extract anything they want?

OR: Are we still in the Dark Ages of extracting each relevant view as a 2D dwg publication set - then expecting them to re-assemble the plans and sections to create their own version of my 3D building?

This scares the hell out of me, in that it introduces every conceivable opportunity for separate manufacturers' components to be resized independently, then not fit together precisely on site.

Is there a reason why you couldn't save from the 3D windows as a DWG and share that?

I don't know.

I have used the standard 2D DWG output files, floor by floor etc for the SE and others but this is my first output to a Manufacturer with A2008 who actually WANTS 3D.

I would not know if what you suggest would work to create an output file, nor whether the A2008 would read it as an entity and create a viable 3D model.

Has anybody got experience of this?

It works though the objects will not be "true" autocad solids.

Got to be worth a try.
I have sent the TF guy a bunch of standard 2D stuff overnight.
I will speak to him tomw and set up to give it a go.
Thanks for the suggestion, will report back on how it goes.

Send him IFC. See http://archicad-talk.graphisoft.com/viewtopic.php?p=112124#112124

And share your experiences also at http://www.buildersnet.org/IFC-BIM/

Autodesk and others have constant presence there.

Still have to see anyone from Graphisoft.

Hi Djordje,
Pardon my ignorance, but other than being delayed by diaboxes saying strange things like processing 234 of 12 operations and holding things up, not sure what IFC is or does.
Also there appear to be two flavours, 2x2 and 2x3 (or some such).
I will go hunt down some Help info but what exactly is this and how do I use it?

Addendum:
Followed your lead to the IFC site. What a tale of wow!
From what I can see, just about nothing works with anything else!
Additionally, the indications are that the AutoCAD 2008 has to be the full Architect or Revit flavours to import, which would preclude my target user.

Did a quick check output in IFC. Bloody Huge! 28Mb in PLN and 78 MB in IFC!
Going to go down well with the ISP putting a 10Meg limit on attachments!!!

Unless I am getting completely the wrong end of the stick - I think I will pass on this one.

IFC can be great for those who have the needs and the means. It is still a bit on the bleeding edge though.
