Some odd interpretation of an alpha channel that creates the white space over the blue? Is the map a flat image?

.png file can contain an alpha channel. Try opening your image in an editor and saving it out as a .jpg

I only use lossless formats...but Ill try out of ps as another non alpha for testing. I have always done this so not sure what has changed
jpg is of no value in terms of size as its always represented internally in a full colourspace as you probably know eg jpg saves out small but all progs use it uncompressed.

More just to test, as .jpgs are flat.

Well it seems you cant set 'transparent'...causes the issue. Hmm when are we going to get overlay controls in layout book...only asked for it about 15 years ago...hehe
