Label object with parameter

Hi,
I'm trying to label a custom object in an elevation.
It's the only way I can think of displaying information of the object in that window as 3D Text is way to cumbersome.
How do I 'get' a text parameter from the object?
Basically the object is very simple but has several possible 2D texts that may be displayed. I need to get this text to display in the elevation.
Maybe there is another way of displaying this parameter other than labels?
I've been out of GDL for a few years and trying to pick up anything new.
Hope this is understandable.....
