Align 3d texture

I have a wood column, no veneer, 8x8 with a wood material that runs in horizontal pattern on each side of the column. I would like to make the material run vertical with the column.

The Align 3d texture does not seem to work with the column. I do the two steps; it allows me to pick the starting vector point, then I pick a spot on the face of the column. Then the command goes dead, nothing happens.

Do I have to create a new material (texture) that runs vertical, and reassign it to the column?

The same is true with fascia that I created with the profiler. The wood pattern runs horizontal, no matter the angle of the fascia.
Would I have to create a material that runs the same angle as the fascia? Seem kind of complicated and tedious.

Any better & quicker ways to accomplish this?

Addendum to the above:

Read the help on this subject. It says the command will only work if the 3d vectorial hatch is turned on in the 3d window. I can do that by changing the engine to internal engine. It is grayed out when OPen GL is active.

But then the column turns a solid color, the texture is gone, I can't see what I'm doing, and the command won't work even if I try it in the 3d window with these settings.

What the heck? Is this command functional with columns?

played with it.

The feature does function in the OpenGL window.

The origin can be changed on the vertical faces, but not direction.

direction will change on the bottom as shown in the attached - 45 degrees.

It seems that you must make a new perpendicular material to be mapped to the side. Dang. Another one for the book.

As an aside, when you face an element with only one material assignment, there's only going to be one origin for the ement and all textures will work from that place, and all direction changes will apply from that place. In the case of a column, it seems that the origin is at 0,0 in the base plane, meaning that the material when changed in direction will spin around the axis, on the bottom....

Compared to the slab or wall elements that have three independent material assignments with their own origins.

Darn is right. Just when I thought it would start getting easier..................

If you have directional materials, it helps to make a number of directions.

This still doesn't solve the one-origin-one-direction dilemma like the profiler.

Rotating Textures (Thoses viewed with the OpenGL Engine) is done in the Materials Specifications DBX. Edit Texture.... Change Angle.

Yes, It seems that you would need a different material for each different grain angle. I guess you could create a "Gable Facia - Left1" & a "Gable Facia - Right1" and a "Facia Horiz" material and set different angles. You would need multiple Gable materials if you had different gable pithes on one project.
