Landscape drawing

Does anyone have a technique they would like to share for doing a landscape plan in AC10?

My goal is to use library plants that in 2d can have custom text. For my colored landscape plan I want to just view the 3d model from the top and get a nice color plan with shadows.

Currently I was trying to use the "Tree 3d 01" with the object ID being the custom text the corresponds with the plant legend. I then auto Label the tree.

Any other ideas? objects?

Here's a basic run down:

Create a colored plan by using a mesh with a solid cover fill and colored contour lines, and separate fills, etc;
Magic wand a marquee on the mesh;
Print the marquee to a PDF (you can get varying results with different resolutions, sizes etc, but the default size at 72dpi is a good starting point);
In Photoshop or other graphics program save that as a PSD or tif image;
Load that image in the Library Manager;
Duplicate a similar material in the Materials dialog and Search for the image as a texture;
Make sure the (x/y) size of the image matches the (x/y) size of your mesh;
Apply that material to the top of your mesh;
Use Design > Align 3D Texture > Set Origin to set the origin of the material to the mesh;
View in 3D using the OpenGL engine.

That's the basics of it, but it has varying degrees of difficulty usually depending on the size and shape of the mesh.

I am a landscape architect that uses Archicad for EVERYTHING. send me a specific and let's ee if I can help. I do exactly what you are describing weekly, but have never had a great deal of problems-- labels are added in PlotMaker, on top of 3D view. It is a very texture rich way to do things.


Another way to do it is "paste" the 3D view back into the 2D drawing. Cool things happen when you use the 3D as a underlay for the 2D work. Have also done this in Freehand and Illustrator as well as Photoshop.

I have also found straight out of 2D Archicad renderings to be quite nice-- at times better than the 3D stuff.

Great to hear from someone with hands on experience. This is my first time creating a landscape plan.

This is what I ended up doing.... right or wrong.

1. I opened the civil plan
2. I used slabs and the 3d text object to create library parts for each plant.
3. I placed the parts at varying heights so that it would cast shadows in the 3d view
4. The plan view was used for the L-1 landscape plan
5. The top down 3d view of the plan was used for the colored landscape plan required by the city.

This method allowed for:
1. easy manipulation of the custom library parts for corrections/changes.
2. text the appeared in 2d and 3d using the 3d text object

For what it's worth I never "unlink" my model or use Archicad to draft in the 2d manner you would with other programs. The method I used seems to still used the 2d-3d association that is a great power of AC.

This is all a work in progress.
