Measuring problems in Teamwork

Bruce
Advisor
I've inherited a file from someone (externally) who has turned all the elevations & sections into drawings. Problem is they're inaccurate and I need to update them with correct window sizes etc.

However, I'm in a teamwork file and someone else is working on the plans and I'm on the elevations. How do I measure the size and location of a window if I can't use the line tool to measure with (i.e. I'm locked out of the plan space)? A measure tool would really be useful right about now.

I know it's not what you want, Bruce, but even using a marquee you can read the co-ordinates. it does pick a point perpendicular to your starting point too, just not sure if it will work in Teamwork area assigned to someone else.

Cheers
Actually this is a great tip. Because you can set the marquee to draw a polygon outline you can then measure in any view. Thanks Stuart!

Although I appreciate all of your replies (and I do - apologies Tom if I sound like I'm attacking anyone) - my frustration still remains.

I won't go on as I will just be repeating what I've said earlier - which I still think is pertinent.

Once again, I very much appreciate your replies (and I mean that).

Cheers.

Did you try Stuart's marquee tip? Works very well! I would suggest putting it in the tips topics.

Sigh.

Yes, everything suggested in this thread is a good 'tip'. They have helped me and I think it's all valuable knowledge. I will use these techniques now that I know of them.

The point I'm valiantly (and it seems futilely) trying to make is that there shouldn't be a need to get 'tips' when it comes to measuring something. Anyway, I don't want to step on anyone's toes, so I think I'll refrain from trying to emphasise my point further. I could even be wrong

Many thanks.

I do agree with you, Bruce. There should be a measure tool, just because there should be.
I think the tool most often used is the fabulous, yet sometimes hard to find "work-around" tool, which I couldn't do without. Maybe it should have its own pallette?

in version 5 or 6 when i first looked at ac that was my first question to the reseller, dont u have a measuring tool??...now, i dont care about that tool
anymore,,, i would rather much better have a footing tool instead
(a good example of a measuring tool is found in microstation..btw)

Hi guys,
I'm not sure if this is obvious or obscure (maybe both!), but you don't have to use a tool to measure something. Place the user origin at one point (alt-shift) and then hover over the other point. Read the coordinates (whichever you need) and that's your distance. I guess one advantage to this method is that you can use it mid-command (i.e.: while in another tool).

This is the way I've always done it and recommend to our users. Of course this won't work along an arc...

Ah-ha! I read this whole thread and I guess I missed it. Of course, now that you pointed it out I see it. See...obvious AND obscure!

another way to find this non-existing perpendicular line on your example
is to select the left wall and (having the arrow tool active), ctrl-click on the node of the other wall. This will create a hotspot on the projection of this node on the wall. So you can measure this distance having two nodes.
I am not sure if this can help since you work on Teamwork.
