Properties and expressions for me are a mystery, so I was hoping someone more skilled can help me achieve what I need.
So in my doors/window schedule I want to show home many left and right doors are per floor. So in the schedule it would show something like this:
Ground floor : L (9) , R (8)
I floor ... etc
I believe this could only be achieved with properties but if there is a workaround please suggest. Also if you have some suggestions for learning expressions I would like to see some.

You dont need properties for that.
Include a home story and opening direction in your schedule. Group by home story (set a flag) in fields list.
Than (after schedule lists all doors, with different opening direction in rows) use a merge feature of schedule to display opening direction in single field.
