Quick test with ArchiCAD 18 and Unity 5

With the new version of Unity 5 released this week, I did a (very quick) export of an ArchiCAD model to Cinema 4D and exported as FBX from there on. This was loaded inside a new Unity 5 project.

Some minor tweaking and adding a simple First Person Controller from the default Unity installation resulted in this nice interactive scene.

Remember: this contains some errors: there are texture mapping errors (introduced in the translation between ArchiCAD and Cinema 4D) and you can fall of the ground and fall into infinity, with no way to get back 😉

Attached OctaneRender picture from Archicad and PrintScreen from Unity right after importing DAE to it from Archicad.
Having something interactive and closer to the OctaneRender rendering would be nice. Don't you think?

Octane Picture is nice and would be a good benchmark.
I'm pretty sure you can get at least halfway there with Unity, with (some/major) efforts.

You could start by making the model and the lights "static" so they get more advanced baked lighting.
And then increase the baking settings, e.g. adding Final Gathering, Ambient Occlusion, increase bounced lighting strength etc...

And then add some Full Screen FX from the Standard Assets Package. E.g. tone mapping, Screen Space Ambient Obscurance (SSAObs) etc...

And tweak materials. I'm still looking for decent Architectural glass.

And then dive into Light Probes and Reflection Probes. I'm still learning those.

You gave me some more incentive to go for an advanced Architectural Visualisation book or video with Unity 5. My book was for Unity 4 and is just the essentials (still largely relevant today, but not for this level of graphics, alas).

Thanks, Stefan.

And the good thing about Octane is that for these results it needs about 5% time of CineRender, not even talking about Maxwell.
