I purchased Cinema 4D 8.2 and was wondering what the best way to export from Archicad and workflow. How does the rendering time vs result compare to Artlantis. Just purchased Piranesi also, I believe you can create a Epix file directly in C4D now

thanks
Lots of new toys! 😉

I only have C4D XL 7 - so AFAIK, there I have to use 3DS and Vedute to go into Piranesi. Nice if 8.2 allows it directly.

3DS format works well from AC to C4D. See various notes and comments in the archives at:

http://www.escribe.com/software/archicadtalk/

and there are also some good comments at:

http://www.fred-speaks.com/phpBB2/index.php

Some of those guys will hopefully re-post their comments here with some nice screenshots of the parameter settings dialogs (hint, hint).

As for speed, comparing C4D and Artlantis is difficult because C4D can do so much more than Artlantis, particularly as far as lighting goes...if you have the "Advanced Render" module (or the XL package). For comparable quality on a fast computer, I don't know that you'd see the difference. With a dual processor, C4D wins since Artlantis won't use the other processor. As soon as you use a radiosity solution, C4D will start to slow down (the race depends on your parameters and number of processors - or even network rendering, and option there and not with Artlantis) - but the results will astound you compared to Artlantis 'global illumination'.

[For example: if the C4D 8.2 CD contains some of the same sample scenes as XL7... look for a folder called 'Radiosity-LIght'. There's a JPG there ("Light") that is a wonderful demonstration of lighting effects that C4D can do and Artlantis cannot even come close to. Load the sample scene file in C4D and render it as a sample of how long such a thing takes on your computer. Not bad at all on mine. I've attached a cropped section of that image for others to see here ... image copyright Maxon Computer I should imagine.]

Including human time, Artlantis is a no-brainer IMHO - wins hands down for quick renderings.

Even if you cannot create the EPix file in C4D ... you can create the file in AC or Artlantis, then render the (same sized) image in C4D and finally import that image as the new Save RGB channel in Piranesi. Mix and match.

Have fun!

Karl

a) wait for the 500$ (??) archilumos add-on

d) get a 700$ vanilla copy of c4d 8.5
e) get a 1500$ copy of c4d 8.5 xl
f) get a 1600$ (?) lightwave 7.5

TIA - Stuart
I'd go for either:
- free C4D6 CE -> with 100$ upgrade to C4D6 CE+ (= no radiosity)
- vanilla copy of C4D 8.5 + advanced render module (= radiosity)
- full C4D 8.5 XL (= radiosity + more animation tools)

Or buy the core C4D 8.5 and work your way through, untill you find it's limits and then do the upgrade to either the advanced render module or the full XL. I don't know if an upgrade to a later versions requires upgrade fees for both the CORE and the RenderModule, though, so in the end, the XL version might be cheaper...

Anyone interested in Real-Time presentations? The first step in C4D would be to "BAKE" the radiosity solution or ray-trace to the model directly. Basically a pre-rendered texture map.

On this same subject I have just found a great tutorial regarding C4D.

This is well worth the read and it contains great example files.

Thanks, Mark! Printed to review later when I have time ... the more examples of this stuff the better ... it's a lot like what Dwight said in another thread about the number of possible Sketch rendering options ... there are zillions of radioisity/light combinations of settings in C4D, so hearing about ones that give good results in a fair amount of time is always very welcome! 😉

Here is how it works....

I don't know a single thing about rendering, I never post an article or proper tutorial. I just go crazy with LINKS.
I know DJ likes the links, always has.

Here is another link from a friend overseas. Toshio Fuji

Great work in C4D. Check this out.

Food for thought, here is how I currently do it. Quicktime vr rendered with 3ivx or Divx5.1. Cinema4D. 46 frames. One level.

Folder at:

http://www.Burginger.com/ARCHICAD_TALK/VR_TEST

Divx = smaller
3ivx = Better Quality, especially shadows

What do you think?

I offer this up on my server for those of you who can show me a better way. <---- Challenge

I have a file at:

http://www.Burginger.com/ARCHICAD_TALK/COLOR_TEXTURES.sit

WARNING - 17 MB

Now here are my observations:

#1 - I use color textures like these to color my projects in ArchiCAD because it allows me to control the exact colored appearence of an object in the ArchiCAD OpenGL window. (Good for Presentations of work in progress)

#2 - The 7+3 character format [Object = Group Name] fits the import/export options for 3ds.

#3 - The texture name stays legible in C4D after import allowing the drag and drop of textures onto objects to go quicker.

#3 - The central folder for textures allows me to point C4D at the same folder and the imported model retains the same look that it had in ArchiCAD.

Questions:

#1 - Is there a way to automate the creation on MATERIALS in ArchiCAD. I currently clone a material, rename, add texture image. - Move - on to the next. Very slow and boring.

#2 - Is there a way to automatically have the textures attach to the objects after import in C4D. This I haven't played with this too much. Eh, Stefen ?

#3 - Can the solid color textures be smaller in ArchiCAD than 124 x 124 ? Like perhaps, 1 pixel x 1 pixel? Again I have not tested this yet.

This whole thing is a work in progress and I offer it here for improvement because it takes so darn long to perfect such a systematic method of texturing. A helping hand would really boost my efforts.

if you see the image you will notice that something is wron!....do you know why this is happening? ... I did some changes on a project that I am working on in AC and when I import it to cinema and select radiosity the photos or whatever this circles are appear like that... huge...

I have tryied to change the import setings/values and the export option values from Cinema and AC respectively, but still same problem occures...

do you know why? anybody?

thanx....

if I open a completely new file in Cinema the radiosity is fine ... the problem only occures when inserting .3ds from archicad!
