By default, slabs with fills will appear behind objects with fills.
No matter in what order they are placed or their heights relative to each other.
You can manually adjust this display order with the display order tools.
If your objects are not masking the slab fill, then I would be guessing that your object does not have a fill or it is set to a transparent pen colour.
TIP: set your background colour to something that is not quite white, so you will easily see white fills and lines without having to turn on the option to invert pen colours..
