can I copy dimensions?
can I copy dimensions? - Graphisoft Community
I connected the grid to the dimensions of the basement 2nd floor, and I want to copy the dimensions to the basement 1st floor. However, it is not copied. Is it the same method as explained in the link below?
ArchiCAD does not understand dimensions.
If there is a hotspot at the location where you copy and link, it seems like you can create the dimensions by programming it....
Is there a reason why you do not do it in Graphisoft?
I want to know about the dimensions pursued by Graphisoft.

1. If you use the Grid system
you don't need to create several grids on each floor as long as you select show on story: All Stories
2. Automatic dimensioning, yes you can use it but it depends on what you want to achieve like for example you want to dimension wall openings.
For dimensions on the Grid I will use the grid system dimension so it will be automatically displayed on all stories.
3. Not sure as well but maybe to avoid confusion with actual text and dimension elements. (no idea just guessing)
4. It won't add hotspots on Girds you need to manually place them...
It will really depends on your workflow... For me I would duplicated the dimension that's generated from the Grid system and then from there I will just press and hold CTRL and click the elements that I want to have dimensions, if this will be time consuming maybe I will use Automatic dimensioning if i will get the job done quicker. Another one is I will do the hotspot and dimension in one floor then grouped them and copy it to the floors that needs that dimension. It really depends.

You can copy dimensions without using the Grid System (or when it stops updating) but it might not be as fast as dimensioning again showing the previous story as a Ref:
----
Alternative is to do the above steps once for your template for 5-10 stories and when you start your project you edit the grid as necessary. Removing individual grids is no issue but adding extra ones will need to edit the dim chain in each story.
----
FWIW I don't mind that there is no automatic way to do this since when "playing" with the grid I like to really be sure and going slow lets me think it thru.

hi! with our proposed new dimensioning tool, none of these (very useful) workarounds would be needed. And yes, you could copy dimensions as you can in Autocad berwren levels and it would rearange all the dimensions according to the model without further work.
cheers and peace to all!

Hi, If you want use the Grid System then within the Grid System settings you can assign dimension on your grids and it will be carried out on the different levels.
but if you want to copy a dimensions it won't simply work...
What you can do is use a hotspot then place the dimension on that hotspot then you can copy the hotspot and dimension altogether it will preserve the dynamic function of the dimension as well.

1. it will be carried out on the different levels. I don't know if I misunderstood what you meant, but are you saying that I should create a Grid for each floor or that each floor will have a dimension?
2. Automatic dimensions are not applied to the Grid.
I asked this question because it seems that you can apply it sufficiently and use it, but you don't.
3. I wonder what the intention is of not being able to copy it.
I don't think it's impossible, so I think it's because you don't want to do it.
I wonder what Graphsoft's intention is.
4. I need to use 4 hotspots to link the dimension lines to the Grid. In order to display the locations of columns, beams, etc. as dimension lines on the Grid, I use 4 invisible hotspots to display them as lines at the locations. Is there another method that I should study?
Here, I also want to know Graphsoft's rule that when you use dimensions on the Grid, it doesn't automatically add hotspots to the Grid so that you can link them.

What I'm wondering is, do you think Archicad's dimension tool is perfect?
Even if I just think about it,
I wonder if there's a reason why it can't be done by searching for hotspots in the same location and copying the dimensions if they match.
And I don't understand why the dimension lines that only change the number of floors in the same grid aren't copied.
I understand what you're telling me.
Create a static dimension, copy it, and use it.
And then copy it and link it again.
It's the same way as using association in AutoCAD.
Monday
Just writing alternate dumb workflow for this specific case, unlink, copy and undo.
I already have my template setup with all the grid dimensioned which solves 99% of my cases.
Dims in AC though not perfect are much better than Autocad.

I don't understand what you're saying.
Are you saying I should buy a dimension tool?
Or are you saying I have one?

keyword is "proposed".
we proposed it a wish long ago. like most other wishes, graphisoft never heard.
but truth be told, almost all the dimensioning problems i have ever read and all the problems we have, would be solved with it.
