3d text?

A co-worker asked if it was possible to create 3d text in version 9. My suggestion was to use slabs.

Does anyone know if there is an option to do this or a better way to achieve the 3d text other than what i have?

Found it. Thanks for pointing that out. I wasn't expecting it to actually be an object.

One question though, to change fonts, you just need to type in the name of the font, right? A drop down menu of the supported fonts would be very nice...

In AC9, yes, you have to type in the font name. In AC10 and later, you can pick them off a list of all system fonts.

The 3D text object can have a buzzillion polygons. Use it judiciously.

You can tweak the 3D Text object by opening its 3D Script and typing the following command at the very beginning:

RESOL 12

This sets the resolution for curved surfaces.
A full circle will be approximated by a 12-sided polygon.
If it is a bit rough for you, you can set it to 16.
The default is 36, this is why 3D Texts are a lot of polygons.
With this you can reduce them dramatically.

It is unfortunate that by the time you get close enough to read 3D text a RESOL < 36 quickly reveals facets.

Yes, maybe part of the answer is to use a non-curvy font type, so this does not become an ugly problem.
