Teamwork & networking

My neighbor and I are both working on ArchiCad 8 on Macintosh computers. He has a network and is using teamwork with someone else at his location. I can access his server and open teamwork files (.plp) however, it takes hours over my DSL connection, which is the fastest I can get from Quest.

I have created a satellite library using the Library Manager and saved the file to my hard drive as a .plc and the problem persists. Do I want to clear the HTTP cache? Will that help?

Loading simpler solo project files also takes a long time, even though the library is less complex with these files.

How can I load files from my neighbor's server over my DSL faster. It literally takes hours and some library parts cannot be loaded. Where can we get help?

when the file first opens it is looking for the libraries which are on your neigbours computer. hence it is tring to DL them across the DSL. Turn off the DSL connection when you first open the CAD file then relink your libraies to the satellite. Then you can connect again. I have managed to save and receive accross a network but it was rediculously slow ( 30minutes) since then i have a faster connection but it can be easier to zip the file and email to your friend who can update and email back as the zip files are much smaller files.

If you really want to network you might be better setting up a WIFI network to your neighbour. that said I work across a network that is 1000 miles apart and it works fine for locating files. When the CAD file gets large I access the remote computer using "remote desktop" which takes actual control of the remote computer- not a network view of the other computer. I can zip the file on the original computer then access the network normally to download it. Much Much quicker.

Even with a 1.5Mb connection the DSL network is too slow for CAD related stuff although it works good for the database network we use for document and correspondance management

This is not very directly related to your question, but it might as well be.
You both should upgrade to ArchiCAD 8.1 if you have AC8. It is a free upgrade. More functions, less bugs, works more smoothly.

How far away are you? When you say "neighbor", are we talking 50' or less? If so, your best bet may be to skip the DSL and set up a wireless router. If it's any further, and you plan on doing a lot of work together, it may be worth the cost of running an ethernet cable,.... and I just noticed Aussie John had the same idea!!
