Sometimes it would helpful to be able to render the effects of an element without showing it - so it still casts shadows (and maybe appears in reflections) but doesn't obscure other elements.
This would be really useful for compositing proposals into photos in Photoshop when they're partially obscured by existing buildings, or for rendering a room interior without letting loads of light flood in from the missing wall.
